Thank Goodness Schools are(n't) Secure!
Launching New Churches, Launching ProcessOur community was rocked by a school shooting a few months ago. A kid just walked in the cafeteria before classes started and killed a classmate. It was terrible and one of those "I can't believe it happened here" kind of days. So with that in mind, I was very cautious to be respectful of the rules and security when I walked into a school lobby yesterday afternoon.
Apparently I was the only one worried about it. And for that day, I was glad.
We've been thinking and praying about three facilities with plans to start talking to their decision makers after the new year. One is a banquet center, one a convention center, and the other a school. Even though it was the cheapest possibile location, I haven't been very excited about the school. Until yesterday.

I walked in to find the main office closed but lots of students just hanging around while the basketball coach was barking his orders and reminding me why I was a proud band geek in high school. I figured there would be an adult at least monitoring the halls or something, but none were to be found. So I asked one of the youngsters where the auditorium was and she pointed me to it. The door was locked but I loved what I saw through the three inch window: a fairly new 500-seat auditorium with a stage, complete lighting system, and black curtains. Leading to the auditorium is a huge atrium which is just inside the front, main doors of the school. On the other side of the atrium is a gym and cafeteria, prime locations for the kiddos on Sundays. Parking is plentiful, about 400 spaces in all, and the location is right in the heart of the community we want to reach. Bullseye!
Suddenly I felt like Mike Hamilton must have felt when he interviewed the cheapest and easiest candidate to be UT's new coach and found that he was probably the best fit for the job. And as bad as I hope Lane Kiffin works out for the Vols, I'm hoping this works out even more!
